How to Rotate PDF Pages: Fix Sideways or Upside-Down Pages for Free

Published by PDFico Team · 5 min read

You open a PDF and half the pages are sideways. Or you scanned a document with your phone and everything came out upside down. Maybe someone sent you a contract where one landscape page sits awkwardly among portrait pages.

Incorrectly oriented PDF pages are one of the most common annoyances people face with digital documents. The good news is that fixing them takes about ten seconds with the right tool. This guide covers every method — from the fastest browser-based approach to built-in options on Mac, Windows, and mobile.

Why PDF Pages End Up Sideways

Understanding why this happens helps you avoid it in the future. The most common causes:

The Fastest Way: Rotate PDFs in Your Browser

PDFico's free Rotate tool fixes page orientation in seconds. It runs entirely in your browser — your file never leaves your device.

  1. Open the tool. Go to PDFico's Rotate PDF tool in any browser.
  2. Add your PDF. Drag and drop your file or click to browse. No upload — the file stays on your device.
  3. Select pages and rotation. Choose which pages to rotate and pick the angle: 90 degrees clockwise, 90 degrees counter-clockwise, or 180 degrees. You can rotate individual pages or all pages at once.
  4. Download. Click rotate and download your corrected PDF. The rotation is saved permanently.

No account required, no watermarks, no quality loss. The rotated PDF is identical to the original except for the corrected orientation.

How to Rotate PDFs on Different Devices

Mac — Using Preview

Open your PDF in Preview. Select the pages you want to rotate in the thumbnail sidebar (View → Thumbnails). Then click Tools → Rotate Left or Rotate Right, or use the keyboard shortcut Command+L or Command+R. Save the file when done.

Preview works well for quick single-page rotations, but for rotating multiple specific pages with different angles, a dedicated tool like PDFico's Rotate tool gives you more control.

Windows — Using Edge or Online Tools

Microsoft Edge can open PDFs and has a rotate button in the toolbar, but it only rotates the view temporarily — it does not save the rotation. To permanently rotate pages, you need a different tool. Open PDFico's Rotate tool in any browser — no software to install, and the rotation is saved permanently in the downloaded file.

iPhone and iPad

The iOS Files app and most PDF viewers let you rotate the view, but they do not save the rotation permanently. To create a properly rotated PDF, use Safari to open PDFico's Rotate tool. Select your pages, rotate them, and download the corrected file directly to your device.

Any Device — In the Browser

The universal method works on any device with a web browser. Open PDFico's Rotate tool, drop in your PDF, select the pages that need fixing, choose the rotation angle, and download. Because the processing happens locally in your browser, it works on any operating system and any device.

Rotating Specific Pages vs All Pages

Sometimes only one or two pages in a document are rotated incorrectly while the rest are fine. A good rotate tool lets you select individual pages to rotate without affecting the others.

If your entire document is rotated — which happens when a scanner captures the whole batch in the wrong orientation — you can rotate all pages at once. Both options are available in PDFico's Rotate tool.

Is the Rotation Permanent?

When you rotate a PDF and save it with a tool like PDFico, the rotation is permanent. The corrected orientation is written into the PDF file itself, so it will display correctly in any PDF viewer, on any device, and when printed. This is different from just rotating the view in a PDF reader, which only changes how you see it on screen without modifying the file.

PDFico processes everything locally in your browser. Your PDF files are never uploaded to a server, which means your documents stay private and the tools work even without a fast internet connection.

After Rotating Your PDF

All of these tools work the same way — directly in your browser, with no uploads and no accounts required.

Fixing rotated PDF pages is one of those small tasks that used to require expensive software. Now it takes ten seconds in a browser. Whether it is a single sideways page or an entire upside-down document, the right tool makes it effortless.
